removing bufferzone/virtual from registry

Postby mangyan on Fri Mar 17, 2006 7:52 am

hi!

I installed Bufferzone for my three browsers, IE, Firefox, and Opera. It works as far as I can see but sadly I had to uninstall it from my system as I have very limited resources and It seems to slow down my computer a bit. What I have noticed is that there is still an entry in my XP registry that points to Bufferzone/Virtual and that I cannot remove. I like to keep my registry clean of uninstalled application but this entry is really hard to delete.

Thanks

Hi mangyan

If you have uninstalled BufferZone (and rebooted), then there shuold be no problems to delete those registry keys you mentioned.
1. Make sure you reboot your machine after uninstalling BufferZone.
2. Use Regedit to delete those keys you mentioned.

Note that since those keys are the root of the entire virtual registry, it might take a while until regedit finish the deletion operation (give it few minutes, don't shut regedit down in the middle of the operation).

Hi there Avital

Yes I tried almost everything including those that you suggested. However, neither could I open any key under the Buffer zone key in hklm/software/Bufferzone nor could delete them. I only get an error window saying "cannot delete Bufferzone: error while deleting key". Smae goes for trying to open subkeys.

We are unfamiliar with the behaviour you described. The BufferZone application does not restrict any access to the registry for programs that run out of the BufferZone.

In addition, I can't see any reason you are not able to delete those registry keys after BufferZone was uninstalled.

Possible reasons for this behavior might be:
1. You are running some kind of registry protection tool (RegDefender etc..)
2. You are running other real-time protection suite (specifically PrevX or SecureOL VE2).
3. The registry files got corrupted somehow (usually due to system crash in the middle of a write operation).

Have you tried deleting those keys while in Safe Mode ?

Thanks Guys

Yup tried to do that in safe mode too but did not work. And mate , yes I do have regcleaner, the Tweaknow version and by Juoni Vuorio. I can see bufferzone in Vourio's regcleaner but cannot removed it there either.I also have regseeker and ccleaner but the bufffer zone key has never been an issue in these cleaners. Avital might just be correct that the Bufferzone key might have been corrupted. I don't think I do have some registry prevs installed (once did) because I do often do some edits in the registry (braveheart!!)

I will reinstall bufferzone because I do really like its concept and will uninstall some old and now uneccessary apps to maybe save on resources (if that helps)

Till then and thanks a lot.

Hi to all

Hklm/Software/Bufferzone/Virtual had a null key in "system" so it was undeletable using regedit. Well got rid of it as I did also under null that was left over by O&O.

Thanks

I've had similar situation under XP Professional with "Virtual" file folder, where "Windows" folder has been created inside of it. It can't be deleted even after BufferZone deinstalation. Windows have said "access denied" even in safe mode (administrator logged in, NTFS file system). The same after booting from XP's CD to recovery console. I've had no time to look at this problem closer, but I suppose that there is problem with rights/attributes settings. I hope that BZ staff will look on this.
